Long, unhurried conversations with the people who work in medicine — nurses, techs, paramedics, chaplains, the ones who clean the rooms. Two or three hours each, which is about how long it takes anyone to stop giving the answer they've given a hundred times.

You can work beside somebody for years — hand over patients, split night shifts, learn how they take their coffee — and still know almost nothing about who they are once they leave the building.
So that's what this is. Everyone who comes on works somewhere in medicine — but we're not here for the war stories or the hard shifts. The work comes up, of course it does. It just isn't the subject.
Conversations run as long as they want to, usually two or three hours. That's deliberate. Nobody says anything true in the first twenty minutes — they say the thing they always say, and then somewhere past the first hour they forget to.
Nobody is only their job. This is the rest.
